I hardly recognize myself when Jax lifts me up to set me on the counter in the bathroom. One look at the blood splattered face of the girl in the mirror, and a shudder of revulsion sweeps through me. Iâm not sorry that I hurt her; I only wish that Iâd done it in a way that didnât dredge up a thousand horrible memories. The Vale I see in the mirror looks far too much like the broken girl I was before Granâs death.
âYou could have ordered her to leave or to freeze and called for help,â he says as he wets a cloth and begins to scrub the blood mercilessly from my skin.
âI know that,â I say, and my voice sounds hollow, like seeing Vivien has scooped out my core and left me nothing but a shell. Or maybe I did that to myself when I let my violent thoughts rule my actions.
âThen why didnât you?â he asks, and surprisingly, I donât hear any judgment in his voice. He almost sounds relieved that I didnât play the damsel in distress.
âBecause whatever punishment the Roanokes would have inflicted wasnât enough,â I answer honestly. I donât have a single regret. If anything, I wish Iâd ordered her to be quiet so I could have punished her longer.
He snorts, his thumb brushing against my lip so softly that I nearly moan and lean into his touch. âYou know that Gregory and Elvira have two of the most painful gifts known to mage kind, right?â
âItâs not enough,â I insist. It will never be enough. Not for what sheâs done to me. He canât possibly understand how deeply rooted my hatred for her is.
His lips quirk up at the corner as he renews his scrubbing. âYou could have killed her, you know. Would it bother you if you had?â
I frown, my mind racing as I try to find a way to answer that. The answer is simple, and we both know it, but Granâs words haunt me. Good girls shouldnât want others to suffer, to die. Revenge is for the wicked, and I know that itâs wrong.
âI think that Vivien has dedicated her life to sin and that her actions have consequences. No amount of repenting will save her now,â I say slowly, my throat tight with the words I want to say but canât. Not yet.
He hums and sets the bloody cloth in the sink. âDo me a favor, Green Eyes⦠Next time you want someone dead, let me do the killing, all right? These pretty hands of yours are going to take weeks to fully heal.â
I glance down at them and grimace. My knuckles are a bloody mess, and when I try to move my fingers, they ache so bad that I have to bite my tongue so that I donât cry out from the pain. âShit,â I gasp. I wonât be climbing for a few days at least, not that I havenât climbed with broken bones before; if Iâd stopped every time Gran broke a rib or a finger, Iâd never have been able to climb.
